What is the CDC?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services with headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, USA.  We are the US national public health agency tasked with assuring quality public health science in the US and sharing our technical expertise with counterpart agencies in partner countries and international public health organizations.  We collaborate closely with the World Health Organization (WHO), the United State Agency for International Development (USAID) and  the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) in developing international public health policies, guidelines, standards and trainings.

The CDC Democratic Republic of the Congo office opened in November 2002, initially providing technical capacity support for HIV/AIDS programs and activities through its Global AIDS Program (GAP). Since then, CDC has been supporting the Democratic Republic of the Congo's Ministry of Health (MOH) in building effective, transparent and results-oriented national public health systems.

What activities does CDC support in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?

The CDC’s DRC office provides technical support for HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment programs, including support for family-centered HIV services, strategic information and disease surveillance and institutional capacity development.  Additionally, CDC has provided support for other emerging public health concerns, such as avian and pandemic influenza, rabies and monkey pox.

Who do we work with?

CDC collaborates with the Ministry of Health and National Programs for HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), Blood Safety and Laboratory Development.  We work closely with the Kinshasa School of Public Health, The University of Kinshasa, the University of North Carolina, Tulane University, Columbia University, American Society for Microbiology (ASM), Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL). Our international partners include USAID, UNAIDS, Family Health International and WHO, UNICEF.
