What is the CDC?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is an agency of the United States Department of Health and Human Services. CDC headquarters is located in Atlanta, Georgia. We are the nation’s public health agency tasked with assuring quality public health actions in the US and on the international scene. We collaborate closely with the World Health Organization, USAID and the UNAIDS in developing international public health policies, guidelines, standards and trainings.
What Activities does CDC support in the Democratic Republic of the Congo?
In the area of HIV/AIDS, CDC supports efforts to:
Improve our understanding of the epidemic by epidemiologic surveillance, high risk behavior surveys, monitoring and evaluation of HIV, TB and Blood Safety programs
Expand access to health care services to pregnant women to prevent transmission of the HIV virus, post delivery services and family centered care and treatment services.
Increase access to voluntary counseling and testing services so individuals, partners and families may know their HIV status
Building laboratory service capacity for public health programs such as HIV/AIDS, STIs, TB, Blood Safety and malaria
In the area of malaria control and in collaboration with USAID, CDC activities include:
conducting malaria drug efficacy studies to determine appropriate drug treatment for pregnant women and children under five years of age
providing technical assistance to establish science based anemia transfusion policies
providing public health expertise in the promotion and effective use of insecticide treated bednets
Who do we work with?
CDC collaborates with the Ministry of Health and National Programs for HIV/AIDS, TB, Malaria, Blood Safety and Laboratory Development. We also work closely with the Kinshasa School of Public Health and the University of North Carolina. Our international partners include USAID, UNAIDS, Family Health International and the World Health Organization.
