Defense Attaché's Office
The United States Embassy Kinshasa has a small Defense Attaché Office, which serves three traditional roles:
- The Defense Attaché is the representative of the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chief’s of Staff, the Secretary of the Army, the Chief of Staff of the Army, and the EUCOM (European Command) Commander to the governments of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo;
- The Defense Attaché is a political-military advisor to the U.S. Chiefs of Mission in Kinshasa and Brazzaville; and
- The Defense Attaché serves as a liaison between the Congolese Ministries of Defense and militaries in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo to the U.S. Department of Defense.
Additionally, the Defense Attaché Office performs Security Assistance and Humanitarian Assistance functions to the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Congo. Previous projects under the security assistance and humanitarian assistance programs have included: the donation of two ambulances to local hospitals; $100k in medical supplies donated to local hospitals; training of hundreds of Congolese soldiers in staff work, medicine, military justice, and combating terrorism; and continued assistance with HIV.
