Summer Access Camp Kinshasa

The American people, through the English Access Microscholarship program, granted scholarships for one hundred Kinshasa high school students to study English for a two-year period. In the DRC, Access students take English classes through CALI, the Congolese American Language Institute, from beginners to advanced (six levels).

This year, the Access students were given the opportunity to practice and improve their English outside their usual classrooms and to learn about some aspects of American culture through Access Camp Kinshasa 2008. The day camp lasted two weeks and was held at the Protestant University of the Congo. During this time, the Access students were immersed in various activities designed to improve their English language skills, such as cooking, dance, Internet, scrap booking, and sports with the U.S. Marines. They were also invited to breakfast at the residence of Ambassador William Garvelink and his wife, where they met well-known professional basketball player Dikembe Mutombo. Finally, they enjoyed a field trip to the Bonobos and a leisure day at a local recreational center.
