Rumble in the Jungle Commemoration
Ambassador William Garvelink and Khaliah Ali celebrated the 35th anniversary of the historic boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman with a ceremony at Tata Raphael Stadium in Kinshasa on October 30. In an event that evoked the media interest surrounding the 1974 fight, more than a hundred local and international journalists were in attendance, as well as many other guests, including Embassy Kinshasa’s Olela Shungu, a security investigator with the Regional Security Office, who served as Muhammad Ali’s personal interpreter during his visit in 1974. Ali won the fight, which he had dedicated to his newborn daughter Khaliah, in eight rounds to regain the world heavyweight championship title.
