Secretary’s Message Opens Mobile Banking Seminar
A taped message from Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton opened a seminar on “Making Mobile Banking a Reality in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC)” organized by Embassy Kinshasa’s Economic and Commercial Section . The seminar was part of a follow-up initiative to Secretary Clinton’s August 2009 visit where she highlighted the positive role that new technology can play in addressing the DRC’s challenges. Two leading international experts in mobile banking-- James Eberhard of Mobile Accord and Timur Nusratty of the Telecom Development Company Afghanistan Ltd. were invited by the U.S. Embassy to participate in the seminar and to discuss with stakeholders key issues concerning mobile banking. The seminar included participants from the government of the DRC, including the Central Bank and various ministries; the military; police; telecommunications operators and the banking sector; and civil society organizations. In addition to the Secretary’s taped message, the opening program also included remarks by Ambassador William J. Garvelink, and the Vice Governor of the Central Bank of Congo (BCC) Jean-Marie Emungu.
