On June 15th, VOA’s popular health program, Votre Santé, Votre Avenir (Your Health, Your Future) aired for the first time on the DRC’s national television station, RTNC. RTNC, which reaches about 80 percent of the country’s 73 million people, will broadcast the show weekly.

“Health is the Number One issue in the provinces,” said Nestor Kabongo, RTNC’s director of programs, adding the show will be translated from French into local languages so that more people can hear it.

The Minister of Communications and Government Spokesperson, Lambert Mende, said that the government is committed to providing information to help prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, especially in the eastern Congo where ongoing fighting has been accompanied by sexual violence and rape.

Hosted by VOA’s Khalil Gueye, Votre Santé, Votre Avenir is funded by the U.S. State Department and is designed to provide people with information about the HIV/AIDS epidemic. It is particularly aimed at a youth audience, since over 44 percent of the DRC’s population is currently under the age of 14.
