Statement in Support of the People of Eastern Congo
November 20, 2012
On behalf of the American people, I want to express my support for the people of eastern Congo, in particular the residents of Goma. As we and other friends of the Democratic Republic of the Congo continue to engage on all levels to resolve this crisis, know that our thoughts and prayers are with you.
In its latest communique, the M23 promised that its forces would "guarantee peace and security for all." This cannot be achieved through its current path of invasion and urban warfare. Instead, the M23 must immediately halt its advance and retreat from the city. All supporters must cease their assistance to the group.
At this moment of crisis, we stand with the DRC and its partners in their efforts to restore peace to eastern Congo.
