Statement by Sean McCormack, Spokesman

Cessation of Hostilities and Kivus Conference

January 9, 2008

We congratulate the Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo on the successful opening of the Conference on Peace, Stability and Development in the Kivus.  We expect this conference to be a catalyst for peace and reconciliation, bringing an end to conflict, involuntary displacement and massive human rights abuses, including horrific gender-based violence.

The United States commends the Congolese government for its decision to cease military operations during the Conference.  The cessation of military operations is an important step toward building confidence and one that brings peace within reach for all parties and all communities.
